Facebook will spend $200M this year just on new server machines alone. Where does this money come from? Banners. Advertising is pretty much the only way a web company will make money. Advertisers pay big bucks to show ads to users and generate sales by directing users to their site where they can make a purchase. Not many websites can get away with charging a monthly subscription fee. Compare this to television, where the users (viewers) have to pay for cable AND watch countless hours of ads. Now banners don’t seem so bad in comparison. Without advertising, most web companies would not be able to survive and we would not be able to send zombie bites to our friends every day.
